Periods - Menstrual Cycle

Periods being to occur in females during puberty. Periods and the menstrual cycle are not the same thing - periods are a part of the 28-day menstrual cycle. During the menstrual cycle, an egg is release from the ovaries and travels through the fallopian tubes to the uterus. A lining builds up in the uterus which would protect the embryo if a sperm were to fertilize the egg. This lining is what is being discharged during a period. Periods usually last between three and seven days, and may be accompanied by cramping and/or headaches. It IS possible to get pregnant during a period. Many females use tampons, sanitary napkins (pads), and/or cups to catch the flow of tissue during their period. For more information about how to use a pad, tampon, or cup:
