Abortions are safe and effective ways to end a pregnancy. There are two general categories of abortions: an in-clinic abortion and the abortion pill. The abortion pill can be taken up to 63 days after a woman's last period. A woman is given the first of two pills, then comes back within three days to take the second. The first pill ends the pregnancy and the second pill empties the uterus. The abortion pill works about 97% of the time. During an in-clinic abortion, a suction device is entered into the cervix and empties the uterus. In order to obtain an abortion, most women must go through counseling sessions to determine whether an abortion is the right decision for them.
