Acne can be very mild (a few pimples once in a while) or severe. Some people with sever acne seek treatment. Acne can sometimes be treated with over-the counter medications, or with antibiotics prescribed by a doctor or dermatologist (skin doctor). Sometimes, getting rid of acne requires other prescription medications.

Yeast Infections

Most females have naturally occurring yeast in their vagina. However, when the yeast begins to grow more than usual, it can cause an irritation in the vagina. Yeast infections can occur both in males and females, and can be passed to a partner during sexual intercourse. Yeast infections can be treated with over-the-counter medications. They can be cause by many things, including some antibiotics, changes in hormone levels, and pregnancy.

Periods - Menstrual Cycle

Periods being to occur in females during puberty. Periods and the menstrual cycle are not the same thing - periods are a part of the 28-day menstrual cycle. During the menstrual cycle, an egg is release from the ovaries and travels through the fallopian tubes to the uterus. A lining builds up in the uterus which would protect the embryo if a sperm were to fertilize the egg. This lining is what is being discharged during a period. Periods usually last between three and seven days, and may be accompanied by cramping and/or headaches. It IS possible to get pregnant during a period. Many females use tampons, sanitary napkins (pads), and/or cups to catch the flow of tissue during their period. For more information about how to use a pad, tampon, or cup:

Moods and Emotions

During puberty, males and females undergo a lot of changes due to hormones in their bodies. These hormone changes also cause changes in moods, feelings, and emotions. During puberty, many people start to feel sexual attraction to other people. Also, many people start to feel a lot more stress than they did before. Some people (both males and females) can go through intense mood swings due to hormone levels.

Hair

During puberty, hair starts to grow on the body where there was little or no hair before. Both males and females start to grow pubic hair around the genitalia and in the armpits. Many females shave their armpits once they start to grow hair there. Males also begin to grow facial hair during puberty. Some females grow a little facial hair as well, such as mustache-like hairs on the upper lip. Some people develop more or thicker hair on other parts of their body as well, such as their chest or back.

Insomnia

Insomnia is a consistent inability or difficulty in falling or staying asleep. Insomnia can be caused by many factors, including stress, hormone changes, some mental disorders, and nightmares. Insomnia can be treated with medications, although many sleep medications cause dependency (when one stops taking the medications insomnia returns). Some antihistamines (such as Benadryl) can help treat insomnia, and often do not produce as much dependency. If you are experiencing insomnia, talk to your doctor before beginning any medications.
